Frozen Shoulder is an extremely painful and often debilitating condition which affects the shoulder. It is primarily characterized by pain and stiffness around this area. The condition is a clinical diagnosis (adhesive capsulitis), although it is, occasionally, the result of an underlying condition. Frozen shoulder is very rare in younger people and mainly affects those aged between 40-65. It can make everyday tasks difficult, such as driving, hanging washing to dry and basic home maintenance. Some people (an estimated 15% of sufferers) have two frozen shoulders at the same time, which makes a whole range of tasks near impossible.
The condition is caused by a build up of material around the shoulder joint, which can be as a result of previous injury and has been shown to be exacerbated by a lack of movement and exercise. Many people have no obvious cause for their frozen shoulders.

• Over 40s are more likely to suffer with frozen shoulder.
• About 15% of sufferers get frozen shoulder on both sides
• Symptoms last approximately 30-40 months (see right)
How long does it last?
There are three phases to frozen shoulder:
• Freezing (lasts 1-8 months)
• Frozen (lasts 9-16 months)
• Thawing (lasts 12-40 months)
Fortunately, once cured, the condition rarely comes back on the same shoulder. A frozen shoulder diagnosis should always be made by a qualified doctor, who will probably prescribe a course of physiotherapy combined with a course of anti-inflammatory drugs known as NSAIDs. Alternative methods for treating frozen shoulder focus on rotating the shoulder through a range of motions which ease the symptoms and eventually help restore movement to the joint.
Unfortunately, little can be done to speed up recovery from frozen shoulder, only to ease the pain and help restore movement. In extreme cases, frozen shoulder can last over four years, although the majority of that time will be spent experiencing the thawing process.
